You don’t see many boilers like this anymore.
We recently attended to service an old floor-standing Potterton Kingfisher, a boiler from an era when heating appliances were often extremely simple, substantial and built to keep going for a very long time.
And this one is still working.
Should an Old Boiler Automatically Be Replaced?
Not necessarily.
Age alone isn’t a reason for us to tell a customer that their boiler has to go. If an older gas appliance remains safe and serviceable, we’re happy to inspect, service and maintain it.
However, there’s another side to the equation: efficiency.
Older floor-standing boilers like this can be extremely inefficient compared with a modern condensing boiler. A significant proportion of the energy you’re paying for can effectively disappear rather than being converted into useful heat for your home.
That’s why, for a boiler of this age, we would generally recommend starting to consider replacement even if we’re able to keep it operational.
Regular Servicing Is Particularly Important for Older Boilers
Annual boiler servicing gives us an opportunity to inspect the condition of the appliance, check its operation and combustion, carry out the appropriate safety checks and identify signs of deterioration.
For an ageing boiler, it can also give the homeowner some warning that replacement may be approaching rather than waiting for a complete breakdown in the middle of winter.
Boiler Replacement Options
When an old boiler finally reaches the end of the road, there are now several options available.
Depending on the property and existing heating system, this could include a modern high-efficiency condensing boiler or potentially an air source heat pump.
At SAFEXE, we can look at the existing property and heating system and discuss which route makes the most sense rather than simply replacing like-for-like.
