At SAFEXE LTD Gas, Plumbing & Heat Pumps we were recently called to investigate a heating system fault in a property where the new homeowner had just moved in.
The boiler had reportedly been serviced prior to the property purchase and the heating system had been described as working. However, once the homeowner moved in they quickly discovered the heating was not operating correctly.
The thermostat had already been replaced and the heating programmer had also been changed, but the issue still remained.
After inspecting the wiring centre it quickly became clear why the system wasn’t functioning correctly.
The heating controls had been wired incorrectly, meaning the heating circuit could not operate as intended. Only the hot water side of the system was capable of running.
Multiple cables were connected to the wrong terminals and several wires were using inconsistent colours, making fault finding more complex than usual.
Carefully tracing and identifying each cable allowed us to rebuild the wiring centre correctly and restore the heating system.
Within a couple of hours the system was fully operational and the heating was running normally.
Electrical faults within heating control systems can often be complicated to diagnose. For more complex electrical work we sometimes partner with AW Electrical in Exmouth, but in this case the issue was able to be diagnosed and repaired on site.
If you have recently moved into a property and your heating system isn’t behaving as expected, it’s always worth having the system checked properly.
Many faults are caused by wiring or control issues rather than the boiler itself.
