We were called to a house in Budleigh Salterton with a 28-year-old Nu-Heat underfloor heating system. It was heating unevenly and taking ages to warm up.
Old underfloor systems suffer from sludge and magnetite build-up, blocked loops, poor flow and unbalanced circuits. Ripping it out would have meant lifting floors, which is disruptive and expensive. So we cleaned and rebalanced it instead.
What we did
- Connected high-flow power flushing equipment and chemically cleaned out 28 years of sludge.
- Flushed every underfloor loop on its own, clearing the blockages.
- Refilled with fresh inhibitor.
- Balanced every circuit on the manifold so heat spreads evenly.
- Checked it with a thermal camera before and after. The after images showed much better heat spread across the floor.
Underfloor heating gets forgotten because you can’t see it, but old systems need looking after too. If your floors are slow to warm or some rooms feel cooler, a flush and balance often costs far less than replacement.
